Congratulations to our current and former kaimahi who were appointed to The New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2024 New Year Honours.
Sir Scott Macfarlane,() Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (KNZM) for services to health. Sir Scott was a paediatric oncologist at Starship Hospital in Auckland and went on to become clinical leader and clinical director of Starship Hospital. He led the development of the National Child Cancer Service (now National Child Cancer Network), improving child cancer survival rate as a result of his nationally coordinated approach.
Professor Brian Anderson(), Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM) for services to paediatrics and anaesthesia. Brian is a paediatric anaesthetist and intensive care specialist. He was a founding consultant at Auckland’s Starship Hospital and is one of two doctors who co-established the hospital’s Paediatric Intensive Care Unit. Brian has advocated for and led the development of paediatric intensive care and anaesthesia in New Zealand for more than 30 years. His research in children’s pharmacology has had a global impact.
Dr Vanessa Beavis(), Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM) for services to anaesthesia. Vanessa held clinical leadership roles from 1997 at Auckland City Hospital and was director of perioperative services from 2004 to 2020. She has contributed hugely to anaesthesia in New Zealand and internationally since 1993, and helped establish an anaesthesia service in Auckland to facilitate New Zealand-based access for people requiring a liver transplant.
Professor Frank Bloomfield(), Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) for services to neonatology. Frank worked as a clinical and academic neonatologist in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit at Auckland City Hospital from 2003 to 2020 and led ground-breaking research into the optimisation of protein intake and nutrition for premature babies.
